Justin Hunter deserves shot to start next season for the Buffalo Bills

Ping-ponging his way around the league at the beginning of last season, wide receiver Justin Hunter was someone that had issues getting settled in early on. Released by the Tennessee Titans prior to the start of the season, Hunter was picked up by the Miami Dolphins for Week 1. Released following the game, Hunter eventually found his way to the Buffalo Bills.

Though he did not play a big role for the team last season, Hunter did manage to turn in some successful games at the end of the campaign. A healthy scratch for his first three weeks with the team, Hunter played in each of the Bills final 12 games of 2016. Though he reception totals only ranged from zero to two, his performance near the redzone was excellent.

Making four touchdown grabs for the Bills last season as a reserve type player, Hunter proved that he deserves a chance to fight for a starting job this next season. An expected free agent this offseason, Hunter will hopefully be brought back by the Buffalo Bills due to these performances.

With teammate Robert Woods also a free agent this offseason — albeit a much more expensive option — the Bills could have some holes to fill at the receiver position. While the team could pursue a first round receiver to fill this hole, Hunter has all the measurables needed to do so already. Using someone they already have, the Bills could open up the tenth pick to be made on another position of need like quarterback or cornerback.

Though his totals over his career don’t appear to be starter quality, Hunter is someone that has all the tools needed to become one. Possessing height, speed, and quickness, Hunter just needs a coach that can help him with all his football skills. If the Bills believe that he can be an every down receiver, he should be retained by the team for next season.

Justin Hunter is someone that is a what if player. That said, he deserves a chance to fight for a starting job next season with the Buffalo Bills. Should the team loose Robert Woods, Hunter should be brought back and given the opportunity to prove himself as a everydown receiver for the Buffalo Bills.
