June Outfielder Rankings

Ryan Boyer examines the fantasy implications of Andrew McCutchen's move to the Bay Area

Welcome to the June outfielder rankings update. Players are ranked for the rest of the season based on a 5x5 scoring format. Included along with the position rankings is an updated top 300. Players are listed wherever they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

o The Cardinals’ outfield has gotten awfully crowded with Jon Jay and Randall Grichuk back from the disabled list, and now that the team has a big opening at first base, plenty are wondering if the team will give Holliday a try in the infield. It doesn’t appear to be in the offing for the short-term, but if Grichuk keeps hitting, there will be more calls for it. The concern is that Holliday might prove to be a bigger liability at first than he is in the outfield. I’m not that high on Grichuk’s bat, but there’s a good chance he’d prove better than Mark Reynolds over the rest of the season.

o It’s still awfully early, but Rusney Castillo simply hasn’t hit the ball with any sort of authority in eight games as Boston’s starting right fielder. It’s quite discouraging, even if he hasn’t looked totally overmatched. I’m leaving him at No. 50 here for now, but I originally thought I’d have him in the top 40 once he was called up. If he doesn’t show more this week, he could end up back in Triple-A for a spell.

o I hate the idea of bailing on Arcia, but there’s a good chance the Twins are going to give him the Kennys Vargas treatment and option him to Triple-A since he’s off to a slow start on his rehab assignment. I still think he’s one of their two best hitters against right-handed pitching.
