Josh Cousineau dodges huge hit, scores wild SPHL goal (Video)

For Pensacola Ice Flyers forward Josh Cousineau, this was going to go one of two ways.

He rushed the puck into the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs’ zone on Friday night, and saw defenseman Nick Schneider ready to end him with a hip-check. So it was either end up on the highlight reel as the victim of a gravity-defying hit, or potentially end up on one for a spectacular goal.

Cousineau, 27, opted for the latter. Ladies and gents, the No. 3 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter last night:

This could have been an instant classic had he scored from his knees, or if the goalie didn’t appear to give up a stoppable shot. But that puck control after the avoided check was fun.

Pensacola won the game, 7-3. It was a bad loss to the Rail Yard Dogs.

“It’s one thing to be able to just take a night off knowing that you’re in the playoffs no matter what; it’s another thing to be fighting for position,” said Roanoke coach Sam Ftorek, whose team is in the final SPHL playoff spot. “We were five points behind them, now we’re seven. We can’t make up ground if we lose to them. It’s just impossible. It’s horrible.”
