Jose Fernandez: Marlins Prospect Gets Surprise Rotation Spot

Rotowire.com
Update: Fernandez was called up from minor league camp Sunday and will be a part of the rotation to start the season, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Recommendation: Shoulder injuries to Nathan Eovaldi and Henderson Alvarez left the Marlins short-handed in the rotation, so Fernandez will receive an unexpected early call to the rotation, despite having not pitched above High-A. While the 20-year-old right-hander boasts an impressive repertoire that includes a mid-90s fastball and a deadly slider, it's probably unrealistic to expect him to dominate hitters upon his arrival in the big leagues. He will make his MLB debut next Sunday against the Mets. Marlins president Larry Beinfest indicated that Fernandez is expected to throw 150-170 innings this season, all with the major league club.
