Jose Bautista's epic postseason bat flip inspired a corn maze

It’s that time of year again. The end of summer is near, which means corn fields are slowly beginning to transition into corn mazes as farmers prepare to welcome fall.

As we’ve seen more and more in recent years, many of these corn mazes are baseball-inspired. Who could forget the Cardinals-Royals corn maze along Interstate 70 in Missouri as the state prepared for a potential in-state World Series last October.

In the most recent occurrence of corn field artistry, an epic postseason moment served as inspiration as the Hunter Brothers Farm in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick decided to honor Jose Bautista’s monstrous bat flip from Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS.

As always, the details of these mazes are extraordinary.

The Hunters Brothers website actually offers an explanation of this particular maze and how it came together, which by itself is pretty fascinating.

Once we decide on the theme, we consult with our surveyor who designs the maze on his computer. The 6-acre field is prepared and planted in a crisscross pattern to fill out the canopy. The engineers then come in and lay out the design in the field using GPS and flags. The Hunter crew, equipped with a small sprayer, goes in and removes the corn which needs to be “erased” to make the paths. After several days of work making the trails we use a small drone to inspect the maze and fix any small mistakes.

In order to make visiting the maze safe and fun for everyone, the maze is made up of many large paths. The objective is not to find your way out, but rather to find and answer all the trivia questions related to our theme that are hidden throughout the maze.

According to Lee Hunter, one of the farm’s owners, his grandmother came up with the idea as a way to honor the Blue Jays 40th season. It’s a good choice too. Aside from Joe Carter’s World Series winning walk-off in 1993, there’s probably not a more memorable single moment in franchise history. That even includes the franchise’s first World Series championship in 1992.

It was spectacular. It was majestic. If you ask the Rangers, the home run itself was a gut-punch and the bat flip that followed was completely unnecessary.

Regardless of how anyone feels though, it’s one of those moments in time we’ll never forget witnessing.
