Jones to make life 'uncomfortable' for Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones promised changes Wednesday after his team missed the NFL playoffs after a second straight 8-8 season that concluded Sunday with a loss to the Washington Redskins.

"I'm very disappointed. I thought we missed a great opportunity," Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas. "I can assure our fans this, that it's going to be very uncomfortable from my standpoint, it's going to be very uncomfortable for the next few weeks and months at Valley Ranch.

"I can tell you change is necessary at 8-8. Change is in order when you spend the two seasons in a row down to the last two games and lose them, so we're going to have to have changes.

Jones maintained his support for quarterback Tony Romo despite his critical interception late in Sunday's 28-18 loss to the Redskins, who won the NFC East and advanced to the playoffs. Romo is under contract for the 2013 season.

"I'm proud of Tony Romo. Read proud of Tony Romo," Jones said.

Jones expressed no interest in making a bold move to acquire another quarterback as Washington did in the draft with Robert Griffin III or Denver did in landing Peyton Manning.

"This isn't the year and I'm not ready to take the kinds of risk that (those two teams took)," Jones said. "What we need to do is Tony is a tremendous asset and he's an asset that's going to be with the Dallas Cowboys for, as far as I'm concerned, a long time."

Jones steered clear of discussing the future of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and whether coach Jason Garrett will continue to call offensive plays next season.

But Jones did say he needs to do something different with a franchise that has only one playoff victory since 1996 and has missed the postseason the past three years.

"But how do we somehow create us an opportunity to kind of break out of this cycle -- drive across the water, if you will?" Jones said during the interview. "That's the challenge that I have right now."
