Barcelona midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos knows how important next season is to him as the World Cup in Brazil looms and his declarations last week that he needs more minutes has sparked renewed interest in his services.
“Next year is very important for me,” said the younger Dos Santos brother in an interview with Esports COPE last Wednesday. “I don’t want to become stale, I want to play.”
The Mexican added that he will consider his position with the Catalan club at the end of the season and speak to the board about what the future holds for him in Barcelona.
“I didn’t expected to play so little,” admitted Dos Santos, who has featured for Barca in just two league games this season.
In the wake of the comments, UK newspaper Metro ran a story on Friday that Liverpool has been following Dos Santos’ progress “for months” and stated that the Premier League club is the front-runner to capture his signature in the offseason.
The Mexican press has speculated in recent weeks that Sevilla, Mallorca, Olympiakos, Tottenham, Chelsea and Everton are all potential destinations for Dos Santos.
The 22-year-old was included in Barcelona’s 21-man squad to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday in Germany.
