Even though UFC light-heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, agreed to put his title on the line against Chael Sonnen when the two collide on April 27, he still doesn't think the latter deserves the opportunity.
As far as Jones is concerned, Sonnen is a cheat who has conned his way to another UFC title shot, but he's willing to put his belt on the line just to quiet all those who actually thought he was scared of the "American Gangster," when he decided to decline the opportunity to fight Chael -- who stepped in as a last minute replacement for Dan Henderson -- at UFC 151.
"It wasn't the money, it really just had to do with getting over this chapter of my career," Jones said during a recent conference call. "I'm trying to move forward and do a lot of amazing things. UFC 151 was a tough moment for my career. I think beating Chael Sonnen -- and then after that beating Dan Henderson -- would help me add closure to that whole situation. … Does it delegitimize the belt, in some ways it does but Chael's not getting close to the belt and this is more about putting an end to his irrelevance."
Jones also took jabs at Sonnen for his testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) usage, making it clear that he isn't a fan on the troubling trend, which is becoming increasingly popular in MMA.
"I think it's terrible," Jones added. "I think it's absolutely terrible if you're going to consider yourself an athlete. TRT would be perfect for Chael Sonnen if he wasn't competing in one of the toughest sports in the world."
Before Sonnen and Jones square up inside the Octagon, they'll coach opposite one another on the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter." Filming for TUF 17 is set to begin on Oct. 29.
Given the entertaining jabs Sonnen and Jones had for one another during their first media call, it's clear that the next TUF season won't be a boring one. Given how badly the series has struggled ever since the UFC partnered with Fox, it's hard to deny the fact that the Jones vs. Sonnen matchup makes a lot of sense business wise.
