Johnson returns to become Virginia Tech head coach
Two weeks after James Johnson left his assistant job at Virginia Tech to become an assistant at Clemson, Jones has been hired to replace Seth Greenberg as Virginia Tech's head coach, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
WSPA-TV, a station in Spartanburg, S.C., was the first to report that Johnson would accept the Virginia Tech job. An official announcement could come Tuesday or Wednesday.
Johnson was one of six Virginia Tech assistants who had left in a four-year-span under Greenberg, and that apparently was one of the reasons Greenberg was fired on April 24.
Johnson came to Virginia Tech in 2007 and he was Greenberg's associate head coach this past season.
He had previously been an assistant at Penn State, College of Charleston, Elon and Old Dominion.
The news that Johnson was returning was welcomed by at least one player.
"Yessss I'll be back next year," scoring leader Erick Green Tweeted.
