John L. Smith, whose 10-month contract as Arkansas' head coach was not renwed after the Razorbacks went 4-8, has been hired as the head coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.

Fort Lewis is a Division II program that went 0-10 last season.

"We are extremely fortunate to have a coach with the tremendous background and experience that John L. brings to Fort Lewis College," said athletic director Gary Hunter on the school's website.

Hunter previously hired Smith at the University of Idaho.

"Fort Lewis College is making a commitment to football. Many of our other programs have reached the pinnacle of success at the national and regional levels. We want our football alumni and fans to have the opportunity to enjoy that same success.

"Not only has Coach Smith had outstanding success on the field, but he has always stressed the importance of academics and community and campus involvement."

Smith, 64, had previously been the head coach at Michigan State, Utah State and Louisville as well as Idaho, and he became Arkansas' interim head coach after Bobby Petrino was dismissed in the offseason for hiring his mistress and intentionally misleading his boss about their relationship and her presence at a motorcycle accident.

Arkansas was ranked No. 8 in the country when it lost its second gameof the season to Louisiana-Monroe, which started Arkansas on a four-game losing streak.
