The Denver Broncos historical success all comes down to John Elway. He took them to a pair of Super Bowls to close out his career, then became the man in charge of the front office that built this contender.

One of his gutsiest moves was trading away Tim Tebow after his epic 2011 run with the team. He did that by signing future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, who cemented his legacy as the best quarterback ever during his four years with Denver.

Nicki Jhabvala from The Denver Post wrote a great story about Elway’s tenure with the Broncos, and he gave an epic quote that’ll send shivers down your spine:

“Because Tebow had such a fan base behind him — there was probably only one guy that we could have replaced him with that people would understand. And that was Peyton Manning.”

As sad as Broncos fans were about Tebow leaving, it was clear his magical half-season with Denver was a one-year wonder. His poor throwing mechanics and lack of creativity was going to catch up to him. Elway knew he had to get a legitimate starting quarterback to bring long-term success.

No doubt, Broncos fans have to be thankful for Tebow. Without him, they would have been a disaster in 2011, and there’s a good chance Manning wouldn’t have wanted to join the rebuilding team.

Manning was definitely the only guy at the time to replace Tebow, because no other quarterback would have been able to top the magic and monumental moments Tebow brought to the Mile High City.
