John Daly Chasing 2013 PGA Tour Card in Las Vegas: A Fan's Take

Two-Time Major Champion is Making a Comeback

Yahoo Contributor Network

John Daly is a two-time major champion, having won the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open, and five-time winner overall on the PGA Tour. His style, characterized by hitting the drive about as hard and far as he possibly could (whether in the fairway or not), led to a common phrase in the 90's of "grip it and rip it". Unfortunately he lost the grip over his golfing career and, along the way, has become as well known for his flashy outfits and sometimes erratic behavior, perhaps moreso, than for his golfing ability.

As the 2012 PGA Tour season is winding down, Daly has a very real chance of earning a full-time Tour card for 2013, his first in six years. With the Fall series beginning with the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, October 4-7, in Las Vegas, he is ranked #132 on the Tour money list. At the end of the season the top 125 will be given cards for 2013.

2012 Performance

John Daly has made the cut in nine of twelve PGA Tour events entered in 2012. He has finished in the top 20 four times, including a tie for fifth at the Reno-Tahoe Open. His earnings are the highest they have been since 2005.

Road Ahead

There are four tournaments in the Fall Series on the PGA Tour, ending with the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, in Florida, November 8-11, 2012. Four more cuts made would likely earn John Daly full-time status once again for the 2013 Tour season. Personally, I hope he is able to play in all four of these events and successfully makes it into the final top 125.

Good Luck, John.
