Americans Abroad Preview: Stiff test for Johannsson, reunions galore

Aron Johannsson is back on the scoresheet, and AZ Alkmaar is back in the win column.

Johannsson's 31st-minute penalty kick was all AZ needed to bag three points and defeat Go Ahead Eagles 3-0 Sunday. The goal ended a personal three-game drought for Johannsson, while AZ achieved victory to end a three-game winless skid in all competitions. Viktor Elm and Steven Berghuis, Johannsson's 81st-minute replacement, tacked on stoppage-time strikes to ensure the win, which gives AZ 10 points from its opening six games of the Eredivisie campaign.

For Johannsson, scoring from the spot is nothing new, as three of Johannsson's four league goals have come via penalty kick. The Alabama-born Icelandic-American has also scored goals in the Dutch SuperCup and UEFA Europa League to give him six in all competitions this season.

Johannsson, who committed to the USA and completed his one-time FIFA international allegiance switch, was on the roster for the USA's most recent World Cup qualifying matches. The 22-year-old forward only played in the waning moments of the Americans' 3-1 loss to Costa Rica before being an unused sub in the 2-0 triumph over Mexico.
