COMMENTARY | There are quite a few high profile free agents on the market this coming offseason in the NFL, and one of those names is New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. Expectations are very high that he will end up signing a new, long-term deal with the Saints, but what if he did end up with the Green Bay Packers? Obviously this is almost impossible, especially with the Packers' dislike for spending money in free agency, but it's interesting to think about it. How would he fit in with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers?
The Packers already have one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL, and adding a superstar like Jimmy Graham would likely making them as close to impossible to stop as a team can get. Aaron Rodgers has had great weapons throughout his NFL career, but adding a 6'7" target in Graham with the athletic ability that he has would be perhaps the best tandem in the league.
Graham is coming off of a huge season with the Saints, catching 86 passes for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns. One of the biggest areas of difficulty for the Packers this past season was being able to score touchdowns in the red zone. Adding a player like Jimmy Graham would give Rodgers the ability to throw over the top of the defense that he hasn't consistently had in his career.
This is certainly a situation that is intriguing to think about. Aaron Rodgers would explode with happiness if the Packers decided to go out and spend huge money on bringing Graham to town. Green Bay's defense is certainly the biggest need this coming offseason, so this signing is even more impossible.
Green Bay does have a need at tight end with the future of Jermichael Finley very much in doubt. The Packers are not expected to retain Finley, and that would leave them with Andrew Quarless and Brandon Bostick as their two best options. Those two players are more than capable of shouldering the load, but Jimmy Graham would obviously be an incredibly big upgrade. Adding him into an already stacked offense including Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and Eddie Lacy would be something to see.
All that being said, Jimmy Graham is the most likely free agent to remain with his current team. The Saints have the money to pay him and he loves playing alongside Drew Brees. If the Packers did decide to go all out and spend big money in free agency, the addition of Jimmy Graham would push their offense from impressive to unstoppable. Once again, this isn't going to happen but it's something that is extremely interesting to think about.
