Jets QB Geno Smith: 'I didn't do enough'
New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith was frustrated and disappointed standing in front of his locker taking questions after being benched in favor of backup Matt Simms in Sunday's 23-3 landslide loss to the Miami Dolphins.
"(I am) just frustrated that we couldn't come out with the victory," said Smith, the Jets' starter in all 12 games this season. "I don't have anything to say about anything else other than the fact that we didn't get it done today on offense or as a team. We couldn't get a victory and that's very frustrating for me as a quarterback."
Frustration encompasses almost the entire locker room.
Smith was 4-of-10 with an interception when he was yanked. Simms didn't fare great -- 9 of 18 for 79 yards and one interceptions. He was sacked three times.
The Jets have lost three straight games and Sunday's loss might have pushed Rex Ryan and New York from the playoff picture for good. At 5-7, the Jets are in need of answers, starting with whether Smith can be one at quarterback. With 29 completions in the past four games combined and 23 turnovers this season, his confidence hit the skids and unwavering support from Ryan has become less certain as tension mounts for the coach to right the ship -- and perhaps save his job.
"Didn't do enough, didn't get it done, couldn't complete a ball, just wasn't good enough to get it done. That's pretty much it," Smith said.
Smith said Sunday he was approached at halftime by offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Ryan and was told they were "going with Simms."
Smith said he had no reaction.
"You can't expect that. That's a decision that's made by the coaches," Smith said. "Obviously, you want to be out there. I always want to be out there with my teammates and always want to be out there fighting. The decision was made and my next move was to now be supportive of my teammates and be supportive of Matt and I tried my best to do that in that moment. Just support Matt, support all the guys on the offense and try to lead from the sideline."
Ryan said nothing is set going forward.
"We did absolutely nothing offensively in the first half, so I was just trying to give us a spark somehow," Ryan said. "I figured that might do it, but obviously....it's not like it's just on one man.
"We'll take a look at the tape and evaluate it at the appropriate time. Right now, I can't tell you who's starting. ... I need to see it, get everybody's opinion and do what's in the best interest of our football team."
