New York Jets general manager John Idzik told NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk said he called cornerback Darrelle Revis after Revis earlier said he was "speechless" about rumors he would be traded.
Idzik said he asked Revis to "give us a chance" to evaluate the entire roster.
The new GM said Revis "reacted well" during their phone conversation. Owner Woody Johnson and coach Rex Ryan earlier said they were non-committal about Revis' future with the team.
Revis originally showed his frustration with the trade rumor through Twitter, which inspired Idzik to call him.
"We haven't taken that first step, and that's what I relayed to Darrelle," Idzik said.
Revis is recovering from a serious knee injury but is expected to draw lots of trade interest from around the league.
