Jets fire coach Noel

The SportsXchange

The Winnipeg Jets announced Sunday that they fired head coach Claude Noel and replaced him with Paul Maurice.

Noel was in his third season as the Jets' coach. He signed a contract extension seven months ago.

The Jets lost their fifth straight game Saturday and fell to 19-23-5 on the season. The 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets dropped the Jets to third-to-last in the Western Conference.

Assistant coach Perry Pearn was also let go.

Noel was 80-79-18 as Winnipeg's coach. He went 37-35-10 in his first season with the Jets. The team was 24-21-3 in last season's lockout-shortened season, placing ninth in the conference.

Noel's first season as coach was also the franchise's first since relocating from Atlanta. The Jets moved to the West this season as part of the NHL's realignment of its divisions and conferences.

Before coming to Winnipeg, Noel spent four seasons as an assistant with the Blue Jackets and was head coach the final 24 games of the 2009-10 season after Ken Hitchcock was fired.

The franchise has not made the playoffs since 2007.

Maurice formerly coached the Carolina Hurricanes.
