Jets’ Confidence Not Enough in Steel City: A Fan’s Perspective

Yahoo Contributor Network

Everyone's riding a wave of optimism in New York Jets' camp this week. We told you so, we keep hearing. We knew we were a special unit, Mark Sanchez indicated. We know what we have inside this locker room, some Jets noted.

Even Jet fans, predisposed to doom after so many years of near-misses and far-misses, perked up with the performance of the team in their 48-28 drubbing of the Buffalo Bills. It won't be as awful as we thought, some fans declared. Heck, maybe Sanchez is pretty good, a couple of people articulated.

Where is the answer in terms of optimism? Of course, it's always somewhere in between, as demonstrated beautifully by the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers after two weeks of football. Both have endured immediate reversals of fortune.

So, then, what do we expect from the 1-0 Jets as they prepare to meet the Pittsburgh Steelers? The odds are pretty overwhelming that the history of domination will continue for at least one more game between the two. Unfortunately for Gang Green, the very sight of the black and gold heralds despair. Sometimes, regardless of era or talent, one team just beats another - constantly. Matchups aside, and even that favors the home team, there is a sense that the game has already been decided in some other parallel dimension.

That said, the one unit on the Steelers which is vulnerable, the offensive line, is not likely to be tested by a Jet pass rush. The pressure part of the Jets defense was not on display last week, and really has not been a factor since coach Rex Ryan checked in at Florham Park. Pressure, as always, will result from blitzing, and that's not always a good idea when Ben Roethlisberger is behind the line of scrimmage with the ball in his hands.

Darrelle Revis will not play which is a major issue against a team with an All-Everything quarterback. The Jets won't run the ball proficiently against Pittsburgh either, leaving this as a contest between Roethlisberger and Mark Sanchez.

Uh-oh. Steelers, 23 - Jets, 13.

Glenn Vallach has been a football fan for most of his lifetime, but never played organized pigskin unless you consider the thousands of youth hours running slant routes on city streets with a friend serving as Joe Willie. Don Maynard was his idol, an adulation he took seriously, complete with a number 13 stitched to his sweatshirt. He remains a New York Jet fan through so much disappointment and embarrassment over the years. Coach Rex Ryan has rekindled a dormant fire, but sometimes he feels as if he doesn't understand the likely end result of all his efforts. It has been 42 years, after all.
