Jets activate QB Garrard, release Quinn

The SportsXchange

Adding a veteran quarterback to serve as a mentor to rookie Geno Smith, the New York Jets activated David Garrard on Monday and released Brady Quinn.

Garrard, who signed with the Jets in March but retired due to chronic knee problems in May, rejoined the team on Oct. 10 and was placed on the exempt list. He had to be activated or released by 4 p.m. Monday.

Coach Rex Ryan told ESPN Radio in New York City that Garrard -- who last took a regular-season snap Dec. 26. 2010, missing time since then due to back and knee injuries -- would be the Jets' No. 3 quarterback. Matt Simms remains the immediate backup to Smith.

Quinn was released prior to the season opener, which meant the Jets didn't have to pay his entire 2013 salary, before re-signing on Sept. 9 and spending the last six games as the inactive no. 3 quarterback.

Quinn reportedly will work out Tuesday for the St. Louis Rams, who lost starter Sam Bradford to a season-ending knee injury Sunday.
