Jeter matches Yankees' record with eighth 200-hit season

NEW YORK -- Back at shortstop after a brief detour to the designated hitter spot caused by an ankle injury, Derek Jeter achieved another career milestone Wednesday night.

Jeter singled leading off the first inning of the nightcap of the New York Yankees' doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays, his 200th hit of the season.

It's the eighth 200-hit season for Jeter, matching Lou Gehrig's franchise record.

"It's a lot of hits," Jeter said. "I've always felt that if I'm healthy and can out there and play every day, it's something that I'd have a chance to do because I've pretty much been hitting at the top of the order but it's a lot of hits. I'm proud of it but more importantly I'm trying to win games."

Jeter had made his previous four starts at DH due to a bone bruise in his left ankle, and he sat out the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, which the Yankees won 4-2.

Last week, Jeter surpassed Willie Mays for 10th place on the all-time hits list. Mays had 3,283 hits; Jeter was up to 3,288 after his first-inning hit Wednesday.

The single also gave Jeter a 13-game hitting streak. In his previous 12 games before Wednesday, Jeter was 22-for-55 (.400). The streak immediately followed a 4-for-31 (.129) slump over an eight-game span.
