Jeter leaves game with ankle injury
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter had to leave Wednesday's game against the Red Sox in the eighth inning after suffering a bone bruise in his left ankle, but manager Joe Girardi said afterward he expects Jeter to play Thursday.
Jeter was injured after he hit a ground ball to second base with a runner on first. Hustling to try to avoid a double play, Jeter was nonetheless thrown out at first base. He then limped into right field after passing first base.
He was bent over in pain, and trainer Steve Donohue and Girardi came out to talk to him before Jeter walked to the dugout.
Girardi said Jeter has been dealing with the bone bruise for several weeks and does not think Jeter will miss any playing time.
Jayson Nix moved over from third base to replace Jeter at shortstop and Casey McGehee came into the game to play third.
The Yankees won the game 5-4.
