Jeter expects to be ready for season opener

Derek Jeter is progressing nicely in his recovery from left ankle surgery, and he's aiming for an Opening Day return to the New York Yankees' lineup.

Speaking Wednesday to reporters at his charity golf tournament in Tampa, Jeter said he's received clearance to resume baseball activities, but that he normally doesn't start his offseason routine until late January.

"In terms of baseball activities, I'm right where I need to be," he said.

Jeter's injury seemingly doomed the Yankees in the AL Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees' captain broke his ankle in the opener while fielding a grounder, and Detroit went on to sweep the series.

Jeter underwent surgery in mid-October and was given a recovery timetable of mid-February to mid-March.

The broken ankle ended what was a bounce-back year for the 38-year-old veteran. Jeter led the American League with 216 hits, and he batted .316 with 15 homers and 58 RBI in 159 games. He finished seven in American League MVP voting.
