Jesus Montero: Losing Playing Time to Backup Shoppach
Update: Montero, who went 1-for-5 Wednesday to drop his average to .209, could lose playing time in the coming weeks to backup Kelly Shoppach, the Seattle Times reports.

Recommendation: Shoppach started four of the last seven games as manager Eric Wedge played matchups. But Wedge said there could be more of that as Montero is struggling at the plate. "We're going to mix and match with that for awhile," Wedge said. " ... We pushed [Montero] a little bit early. We're backing off a little bit now, and let's see where it goes." That's a significant downgrade for Montero, of whom much was expected this season. Further hurting his outlook is that DH at-bats are not available for him this season with Kendrys Morales the regular DH. A bigger question is what happens when Mike Zunino is ready for promotion. Shoppach doesn't appear to be going anywhere, so Morales or Montero would have to be moved (other than the unlikely event of keeping three catchers on the roster).
