With hours to go before UFC on FX 5, the Hennepin County Jail in Minneapolis is the last place any UFC fighter would go to relax and prepare for battle. Not that Jeremy Stephens had a choice. Stephens was arrested at 10:44 am by the Minneapolis Police. He has been charged with a felony and is being held without bail. source
Stephens vs Edwards: Main Event on Preliminary Card on Fuel TV
The fight between Jeremy Stephens and his opponent, Yves Edwards, is the main event on the Fuel TV preliminary portion of the UFC on FX 5 fight card scheduled for October 5th.
With a fighter being arrested on the day of the event, the Zuffa organization has a new wave--of reasons fights (might) get cancelled--to ride. Two events have been cancelled in recent weeks (UFC 151 and a Strikeforce event).
Injured fighters have been the cause for a steady stream of cancelled match-ups.
Ariel Helwani reported that Dana White is saying that Jeremy is still scheduled to fight. From reading Ariel's tweets, it sounded like Jeremy has not yet been released, but apparently, someone is working on making sure that Jeremy is free to fight this evening.
How is Jeremy going to stay focused enough to face Yves Edwards?
Jeremy lost his last two fights by decision--split decision to Anthony Pettis and unanimous decision to Donald Cerrone in May at UFC on Fuel TV 3.
Seems to me, even if Jeremy is released and allowed to fight, his head will not be in the game.
Arianny Celeste turned up (late) to UFC 146 after her domestic violence arrest in May. But she didn't have to face Yves Edwards (41-18-1).
If the greatest promoter since P.T. Barnum is trying to drum up interest for a fight, having one of his fighters arrested--the morning of the event--is working for him. People who weren't paying attention to UFC on FX 5 are paying attention now.
@DrJCBenjamin tweeted, "Chad Johnson gets arrested, he's quickly cut by Dolphins. Jeremy Stephens gets arrested, he could still win a UFC FOTN [Fight of the Night] bonus. Man, I love MMA!"
@Jason_Floyd tweeted, "Thought on Jeremy Stephens situation…did he know he had a warrant for his arrest? If he knew, did he tell the UFC about it?"
That's a very interesting question. Was Jeremy responsible for notifying the UFC about a possible problem with an outstanding arrest warrant?
Yes, I think so.
