Jays' Escobar suspended three games for gay slur

The SportsXchange

The Toronto Blue Jays announced Tuesday a three-game suspension for shortstop Yunel Escobar as a result of a homophobic slur written in Spanish on the eye black he wore during last Saturday's game.

The punishment, agreed upon by major league baseball, the team and the players' association, will include a donation to the You Can Play Project and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Escobar also will take part in sensitivity training and an educational outreach effort focused on tolerance.

He begins serving the suspension Tuesday night.

"I don't have anything against homosexuals," Escobar said Tuesday through a translator at a news conference. "I have friends that are gay.

"The person who decorates my house is gay; the person who cuts my hair is gay."
