Jays' Bautista goes on DL with hip bruise

The Toronto Blue Jays' rotten day took one more rough turn Tuesday night.

After the Jays were swept in the doubleheader by the New York Yankees, the team announced that right fielder Jose Bautista would be placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a bone bruise on his left hip.

Hip soreness forced Bautista to exit in the fourth inning of the afternoon game, an 8-4 Toronto loss. Manager John Gibbons said in between games that inactivity on defense caused the problem to flare up. Tests revealed the bone bruise, and Bautista didn't play in the second game, which the Yankees won 3-2.

"He felt it a couple of days ago and said it was no big deal, but all of that standing around in the outfield during all of those pitches aggravated it," Gibbons said. "He hurt it on a slide, maybe our last game back home, but it wasn't enough to knock him out."

Bautista went 0-for-1 with a walk Tuesday, leaving him 4-for-32 (.125) with one homer and two RBIs in his past nine games.

On the season, Bautista is hitting .259 with a .358 on-base percentage, a .498 slugging percentage, 28 homers and 73 RBIs in 118 games. He made his fourth consecutive All-Star appearance last month.

The Blue Jays figure to call up an outfielder Tuesday to replace Bautista on the roster.
