Rap mogul and new sports agent Jay-Z is more than just a figurehead as client Robinson Cano hits the free agent market. Jay-Z's Roc Nation picked up Cano, the New York Yankees' star second baseman, as one of its first high-profile clients earlier this year. While agent Brodie Van Wagenen is Cano's primary negotiator, Jay-Z is also reportedly heavily involved in the process. Van Wagenen told MLB Network Radio on Sunday that Jay-Z has been "intimately involved in all areas" of the negotiations. "That has been true for the last six months," he said. "It's certainly true now. Jay is a very, very successful businessman, who has a keen understanding of value, a keen understanding of brands, and a keen understanding of what this player, Robinson Cano, wants to accomplish in his career. ... "He's been at the table both in strategy sessions and in preparation. And he absolutely has, and will continue to be, involved in the actual negotiations with potential suitors." Cano, 31, may command a $300 million contract. He had a batting line of .314/.383/.516 with 41 doubles, 27 home runs and 107 RBIs in 2013. He has been a top-six finisher in American League MVP voting in each of the past four seasons.
