Jason Dufner Wins Second Event of Year at HP Byron Nelson Championship: A Fan’s Take

Jason Dufner joined Hunter Mahan in a prestigious group in 2012 as the only players to have won multiples times on the PGA Tour in 2012, with him winning the HP Byron Nelson Championship on May 20 with an exciting finish.

Jason Dufner

Dufner went into the final day with a one stroke lead over multiple golfers, and it seemed as though it would come down to the last hole on Sunday for someone to win the golf tournament, which is exactly what happened. Jason got off to a slow start by bogeying two out of the first three holes on the golf course, but then birdied three out of his next four holes to catch up quickly. Dufner came into the final hole tied with Dicky Pride, who had made a fantastic par putt ahead of him after hitting it into the water.

He hit a solid drive down the middle, then a wedge approach shot to about 25 feet away and drained the putt to win the 2012 HP Byron Nelson Championship by one stroke over Pride for his second victory in less than a month. He played good enough to win the PGA Championship last year were it not for Keegan Bradley, and it was only a matter of time before he was going to get a win on the PGA Tour. Now that he has two in such a short amount of time, he could certainly be viewed as a threat to win the U.S. Open in a few weeks from now.

Phil Mickelson

Mickelson started off Sunday well out of the lead but made a charge on the final day. He started off the day with four straight pars but then went on a birdie binge after that, with four birdies in a row from holes 5 through 8 to give himself a chance to win if he had a strong back nine. Unfortunately it wasn't to be for Mickelson on Sunday, as his driving was a bit inconsistent with only 50% of the fairways hit along with making bogey on the final two holes of the day.

Among the other notables, Vijay Singh had a solid tournament and finished T9 at -5 overall, Matt Kuchar finished T15 after a disappointing weekend of +2 overall, with a similar fate happening to defending champion Keegan Bradley as well, who shot +3 on the weekend after starting out 67-68.
