Recommendation: Beyond that, the Lions have a 21-day window to activate Best or give him another 21-day practice window and the first game that he would be even be eligible to play in would be the Lions' Oct. 22 contest against the Bears. At this point, Best still hasn't been cleared for contact, so it's not close to a lock that he'll be able to play once his PUP list stint is up. Assuming his health, Kevin Smith is in line to start for the Lions out of the gate, given that Mikel Leshoure (suspension) can't play in the regular season until Week 3.
Update: The Lions have placed Best (concussion) on the PUP list to start the season, the Detroit News reports. As a result, Best is ineligible to play in the first six weeks of the upcoming season.
