New Jaguars GM David Caldwell dismissed head coach Mike Mularkey on Thursday.
“I know Mike well and do not want anyone to misinterpret the rationale behind my decision,” Caldwell said in a statement. “Mike is an excellent coach and I am sure he will succeed in his next stop in the NFL. However, I must do what I believe is best for the Jaguars and immediately explore every avenue possible to turn our football team around.”
In Mularkey’s first season, the Jaguars went 2-14 and will have the No. 2 pick in April’s draft. Owner Shahid Khan dismissed GM Gene Smith following the season and hired Caldwell on Tuesday.
Mularkey and Caldwell were both with the Falcons from 2008-11, when Mularkey was the offensive coordinator and Caldwell was the team’s director of college scouting.
“Mike gave the Jaguars everything he had on and off the field,” Khan said.
