The Islas Canarias Santa Pro resumed on Friday, October 26, 2012 in Lanzarote. Once again, the surfers were greeted with winds, sunny skies and waves in the two to three foot range. The day's action began with Round 16. Here's a quick glimpse at some of the early results:
Round 16 Results
Round 16 began with a surf heat between Heitor Alves (BRA) and Gabe Kling (USA). Gabe Kling dominated the surf heat. His best maneuvers resulted in a 7 point ride and a 5.33 point ride. Collectively, they effectively ended Alves' chances of competing in the final. Gabe Kling won the surf heat with 12.33 points. I thought that his surfing showed a lot of style.
The highest surf heat score of the round was earned by Jean Da Silva (BRA) during his Heat 4 matchup against Jonathan Gonzalez (CNY). Jean Da Silva won the surf heat after firing off an 8.27 point ride and a 6.67 point ride. He completed the heat with 14.94 points. Although he did not win, Jonathan Gonzalez also managed to deliver a noteworthy 8.60 point ride. If you ask me, it was the best heat of the round.
The 2nd highest surf heat score of the round was produced by Nathaniel Curran (USA) during his matchup against Nat Young (USA). Nathaniel Curran won the surf heat with 14 points. His best maneuvers resulted in an 8.33 point ride and a 5.67 point ride.
The quarterfinals kicked off with a surf heat between Gabe Kling (USA) and Aritz Aranburu (EUK). Gabe Kling started out strong by posting a 7 point ride. He backed it up with a series of strong turns that garnered him an additional 5.33 points. Aritz Aranburu answered back with four turns and a lip smash that earned him 5.33 points. The two surfers continued to battle it out like that throughout the rest of the heat. In the end, Gabe Kling won the surf heat with 12.33 points. He is expected to surf again in Heat 1 of the semifinals.
Heat 2 featured Nathaniel Curran (USA) and Jean Da Silva (BRA). Both men opened up the surf heat with sharp snaps and well executed turns. Then Nathaniel Curran really turned up the intensity. He posted a 9.17 point ride and backed it up with a sweet floater. It earned him an additional 4.77 points. Jean Da Silva responded with a huge air reverse. Unfortunately for Jean Da Silva, it only earned him 4.87 points. Nathaniel Curran won the surf heat with 14 points. He is anticipated to face off against Gabe Kling (USA) in the semifinals.
The Islas Canarias Santa Pro is expected to end later today. Surf fans may want to consider checking out all the live action on the event's website. Personally, I plan on rooting for Gabe Kling (USA) in the semifinals.
