Islanders' MacDonald out 6-8 weeks

New York Islanders defenseman Andrew MacDonald had surgery on his left hand and will be out 6-8 weeks, Islanders head coach Jack Capuano told reporters on Friday.

That probably puts him out for the rest of the postseason unless the Islanders make a deep run.

MacDonald, 26, broke his hand in the third period of New York's 6-4 win in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal against Pittsburgh. He was replaced by Radek Martinek in Game 5.

MacDonald had three goals and nine assists in 48 regular-season games, and he led the team in playing time, averaging 23:31 per game.

MacDonald did not score in four postseason games but was averaging over 23 minutes per game.
