NEWARK, N.J. -- If this ends up being goaltender Martin Brodeur's final start with the New Jersey Devils, he went out on a down note.

The 41-year-old made 28 saves but failed to stop all three attempts in a shootout as the New Jersey Devils lost 3-2 the New York Islanders on Friday night at the Prudential Center in a battle between teams with no chance of reaching the postseason.

The Devils fell to 0-13 in shootouts this season and have lost an NHL-record 17 consecutive shootouts dating to last season.

Brodeur could get the start in the Devils' season finale on Sunday afternoon here against the Boston Bruins, but he will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. He could opt for retirement or continue his career with another franchise.

Left wingers Ryan Carter and Patrik Elias scored for the Devils.

Centers Anders Lee and Ryan Strome had goals from the Islanders, who received 25 saves from goaltender Anders Nilsson. Strome scored the deciding goal in the shootout.

The Islanders will finish their season on Sunday afternoon in Buffalo against the Sabres.

Lee put the Islanders on top 1-0 with his seventh goal in 21 games at 10:04 of the first period. He snapped a wrist shot that beat Brodeur to the stick side on the Islanders' second shot of the game.

Carter tied the score at 1 less than a minute later, slipping behind the defense to tap a pass from right wing Steve Bernier past Nilsson.

Elias' 18th goal of the season with 8.3 seconds remaining in the period gave the Devils a 2-1 advantage. Nilsson was unable to stop a seemingly harmless wrist shot from just above the left faceoff circle.

Strome pulled the Islanders even 19 seconds into the third period with his seventh goal of the season.

NOTES: Islanders RW Justin Johnson made his NHL debut after he was called up to replace injured C Johan Sundstrom (head, neck). The 32-year-old Johnson is the 14th rookie to appear in a game for the Islanders this season. ... Devils RW Jaromir Jagr registered his 1,048th career assist, moving him to within one of Gordie Howe for eighth on the NHL list. Jagr has played 325 fewer career games than Howe. ... The Devils were without D Eric Gelinas (healthy scratch), D Bryce Salvador (lower body), C Adam Henrique (lower body) and LW Ryane Clowe (upper body).
