The SportsXchange

Cold shooting, an inability to rebound and a staggering disparity in free throws were too much for Coppin State to overcome Saturday in a humbling 80-50 loss to Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Sophomore forward Aaron White scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Hawkeyes (11-2), who won their sixth consecutive game to improve to 9-0 at home. Freshman guard Sterling Smith, senior guard Troy Franklin and junior guard Andre Armstrong scored nine points apiece for the Eagles (3-10), who have lost six of eight.

The Eagles trailed 10-7 five minutes into the game, but the Hawkeyes mounted a 14-2 run to take a 24-9 lead with 7:25 to go in the opening half. The drought returned for Coppin State over the final five minutes. The Eagles missed their last seven shots while Iowa made 6 of 8, using a 16-1 run to take a commanding 40-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Iowa outrebounded Coppin State 50-27, made 18 of 31 free throws and shot 51.7 percent despite going 0 of 17 from 3-point range. The Eagles made nine 3-pointers but shot just 29.2 percent and attempted only six free throws.
