Iowa 76, Northwestern 50

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Iowa coped with a first-half point drought from scoring leader Roy Devyn Marble, then pulled away in the second half Saturday for a 76-50 victory over Northwestern.

Iowa (16-4, 5-2) got 14 points from Marble and reserve Gabriel Olaseni and 11 from guard Mike Gesell as the Hawkeyes found a way to stop committing turnovers in the second half. Iowa gave up the ball 10 ties in the first half to three by Northwestern (10-11, 3-5).

Marble failed to score until 18:45 remaining in the game, but scored 11 points in the first 10:19 of the second half to help the Hawkeyes pull out to a 54-38 lead after leading 30-24 at the break.

Marble's first field goal with 16:53 to play triggered a 7-0 run that gave Iowa a 41-30 lead. Iowa never led by less than seven after that. Marble scored four points in another 7-0 run later in the half when Iowa took a 50-38 lead.

Northwestern got 20 points from forward Drew Crawford and 11 from Tre Demps, but was dominated inside throughout the game, losing the rebounding battle 44-20.

The Wildcats, who lost 93-67 at Iowa on Jan.9, struggled to get production from 7-foot center Alex Olah in the first half, as he went 0-of-6 from the floor. They stayed close despite hitting only 5 of 20 shots in the first 12 1/2 minutes.

Crawford led a late first-half Northwestern surge with a three-point play after back-to-back layups and trailed 30-24 at the half.

NOTES: Early in Saturday's game F Melsahn Basabe pulled in his 700th career rebound. He leads all active Big Ten players in rebounds with 703. Basabe came into the game third in the Big Ten on the season in rebounding at 8.2 per game. ... Iowa coach Fran McCaffery had a 9-29 record in road games coming into the contest, including 1-3 in road games this season. ... Iowa came into the game leading the Big Ten in scoring at 85.7 points per game, but since losing to Iowa 93-67 Jan. 9, the Wildcats had held four opponents to 51 points a game.
