Iona basketball recruit Michael Gaynes was shot and killed in front of his home in Chicago late Thursday night. Gaynes was 22. Iona coach Tim Cluess said the 6-foot-7 Haynes, part of a nine-man recruiting class, "wanted a better life for himself. He was just looking for a chance to change his life," Cluess told the New York Daily News. Gaynes was shot three times -- in the chest, lower back and wrist -- trying to break up a fight over a stolen necklace, his cousin, Kandice Blouin, told the Daily News. Haynes played at Washington High School and averaged 17 points and 22 rebounds as a junior. He played last season at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.
