The Ryder Cup selection process may seem bewildering to some, but golfers are chosen based on a fairly simple process.
The United States team selects eight players using a points system focused on earnings with varying weight assigned to different tournaments. In addition to the top eight players chosen based on the Ryder Cup points list, the team captain, Davis Love III, personally selects four more players to round out the United States' 12-man Ryder Cup team.
Ryder Cup U.S. Points System
This system determines eight of the 12 players selected to represent the U.S. in the Ryder Cup.
2011 Major Championship Earnings
Prize money earned in the 2011 editions of the major tournaments is considered in United States point system. Earnings from the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship are valued at a rate of one point for every $1,000 earned.
2012 Major Championship Earnings
The United States Ryder Cup point system takes in to account all prize money won during the 2012 calendar year at the majors, including the Masters, U.S Open, British Open, and PGA Championship. The point system assigns two points for every $1,000 of prize money earned at 2012 majors.
2012 Official PGA Tour Earnings
Points are awarded for money earned in official PGA Tour events from January 1, 2012, through August 12, 2012. The official PGA Tour events considered in this metric exclude the major championships and events played opposite major championships and World Golf Championships. Every $1,000 of prize money earned through these tournaments is worth one point toward a player's Ryder Cup points tally.
2012 Events Played Opposite Championships
The United States Ryder Cup point system also awards points for earnings won at events played opposite the majors and opposite the World Golf Championship. Events held between January 1, 2012, and the end of the PGA Championship are included in this metric for Ryder Cup points. Prize money won during these events are valued at a rate of one-half point per $1,000 of earnings.
Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods were the eight players who qualified for the United States team for the 2012 Ryder Cup based on points.
Captain Davis Love III personally chose four players who did not make the United States Ryder Cup team based on the pre-determined point system. These four appointed players round out the United States' 12-man team for the 2012 Ryder Cup. Team captain Davis Love III chose Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, and Steve Stricker to fill out the team's spots for the 2012 Ryder Cup.
