New injury knocks Royals' Cain off rehab assignment

More bad news for the Kansas City Royals.

Sure, they won 8-2 at Cleveland on Wednesday night to snap a 12-game losing streak, earning their first victory since April 10, the day center field Lorenzo Cain went out with a strained left groin.

The plan was for Cain to come off the disabled list Friday at Minnesota, but he is out indefinitely. Cain, who was on a rehab assignment with Class AA Northwest Arkansas, suffered a new injury Tuesday night and left after one inning. The preliminary diagnosis is a strained left hip flexor.

"He has to fly back to Kansas City and have it re-evaluated by our doctors," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "It was in a different spot. It was a hip flexor. It wasn't in the groin like it was before. We'll just see what the doctor says and go from there. He's back to square one."

Mitch Maier and Jason Bourgeois will continue to fill in for Cain.

"I've got confidence in Mitch and Jason," Yost said. "I don't point to (Cain's injury) as the reason we've lost 12 in a row. We lost him right before this streak started, but I don't think it has any significance."

Cain went 1-for-9 in three games with Northwest Arkansas before suffering the new injury.
