Injuries will force Maryland to start a linebacker at quarterback
Maryland's string of bad luck with its quarterbacks continued this weekend, as the Terps lost their fourth starting quarterback to injury, meaning a freshman linebacker is likely to be Maryland's starting quarterback this week.
The problems began when starting quarterback C.J. Brown suffered a torn ACL in August. He was replaced by Perry Hills, but Hills suffered an ACL tear a week ago, and he was replaced by Devin Burns.
On Thursday, the Terps announced Burns will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury. He was replaced by Caleb Rowe, a freshman and the only scholarship quarterback remaining on the roster.
But on Sunday, Maryland announced Rowe has torn his ACL and will miss the remainder of the 2012 season.
"I feel awful for Caleb. I know how excited he was to get his opportunity to be the quarterback of this team," head coach Randy Edsall said in a statement. "Caleb has a bright future ahead of him and we will do everything we can to support him through the rehab process."
Edsall apparently will turn to freshman linebacker Shawn Petty, who was an option quarterback in high school but was recruited as a defensive player.
Unless there is some change, Petty is expected to be Maryland's starting quarterback against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
The Terps are 4-4 and have lost two straight.
