Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight champion, Jose Aldo (21-1-0), has been pulled out of his UFC 153 encounter against Frankie Edgar (14-3-1) due to a foot injury. To make things worse, the news comes on the same day the promotion's president, Dana White, revealed that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (32-10-0) was forced to pull out of his UFC 153 fight against Glover Teixeira (18-2-0).
"Rampage is hurt and out of UFC 153 RIO. SUCKS!!!!!!" White tweeted early today (Sept. 11).
A couple of hours later, White had some more disappointing news for UFC fans.
"Now Aldo is out with [a] foot injury," White wrote. "Main and co main in the same day!! Another amazing day at the UFC. We have some work to do."
Given the fact UFC 153 is less than a month away (the event is set for Oct. 13, at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro), White and the rest of the promotion's brass certainly have their work cut out for them. Finding suitable opponents willing to take on dangerous fighters like Edgar and Teixeira won't be easy, and it'll be interesting to see who steps up to the plate.
It should be a little easier to find an opponent for Edgar, considering the fact he does have name recognition, but finding an opponent for Teixeira won't be an easy task. Skill wise, Teixeira seems to be a legitimate contender, but he's long way from becoming a household name. It really wouldn't make sense for any well-known light-heavyweight to take a fight against an unrecognized fighter, who has a decent chance of defeating many fighters at 205 pounds.
Fortunately for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the UFC 153 fight card started off pretty stacked, and it'll still be a decent event even if the promotion isn't able to find suitable replacements for Aldo and Jackson. The event still has Erick Silva, Jon Fitch, Phil Davis, Wagner Prado, Damien Maia, and Rick Story, and I'm sure hardcore fans will tune in regardless.
Still, it would be nice to see fighters step up to the plate.
