Injuries continue to hit D-backs

Right-hander Daniel Hudson was the latest Diamondback to feel the injury pinch when he

was placed on the disabled list Saturday with a shoulder impingement. The D-backs also

placed top run producer Chris Young and infielder Geoff Blum on the disabled list last

week.

Hudson said he didn't feel right the day after an April 13 start in 42-degree weather

in Colorado and the tightness never left, although he pitched through it while giving up

two runs in 7 2/3 innings of a 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh on April 18. His DL stint is

retroactive to April 19.

He received an MRI on Friday that showed no structural damage while dealing with a

diagnosis that no pitcher likes to hear.

"It's scary, yeah, especially if you've never felt it before," said Hudson, 1-1 with a

6.00 ERA in three starts. "All the worst thoughts go through your mind. You hear so many

stories about guys who don't bounce back well from shoulder injuries. You just pray for

the best."

The D-backs, who beat Atlanta 6-4 Sunday, are expected to use left-hander Wade Miley on

Hudson's next turn through the rotation Monday against Philadelphia. They would need a

fill-in only twice if a) Hudson's stay on the disabled list does not extend much past 15

days and b) they keep other pitchers on four days' rest after an off day Thursday. D-backs

manage Kirk Gibson, however, likes to keep his rotation intact even through off days.

Hudson was 16-12 with a 3.49 ERA in 222 innings last season, all career-high numbers in

his first full season in a major league rotation.

"I didn't really bounce back that well after my start in Colorado. I haven't felt that

good since then. It was one of those things that we didn't want to push it as far as we

already had. Might as well take some time now and get it better. I'd rather be safe than

sorry in April and be ready to go in September and October.

"It's frustrating," Hudson added about the early injuries, "but it's just a rough patch

we're going through right now. Hopefully we'll have no setbacks from anybody and get

everybody back healthy as soon as we can."
