Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard was struck by debris while waving the green flag to start the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on Saturday but was not seriously injured.

Pole-sitter Sebastian Saavedra's car stalled at the start of the race on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, causing a violent crash involving several cars that sprayed debris onto the track in the front straightaway and scattered nearby workers.

Ballard was treated at the track for scrapes and bruising after he was struck near his left elbow and on the left side of his chest. He was serving as the honor starter.

"Thanks everyone for well wishes & the great #IUHealth & @IMS staff for checking me out. Watching the rest of the race from home," Ballard said via Twitter.

Ryan Hunter-Reay dodged Saavedra's stalled car at the standing start, but Carlos Munoz hit Saavedra and then he was struck from behind by Mikhail Aleshin.

Simon Pagenaud won the event and Hunter-Reay finished second.
