The Cleveland Indians signed free agent catcher Kelly Shoppach to a minor league deal Friday and assigned him to Class AAA Columbus.
Shoppach, 33, batted .196 with three homers and nine RBI for the Seattle Mariners in the first half of the season before the club released him June 20.
In the last two months, Shoppach played in the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates minor league systems.
Shoppach played for the Indians from 2006-09 after being traded by the Boston Red Sox. In nine seasons, Shoppach has batted .224 with 70 home runs and 216 RBI over 571 games.
