Indians' Hernandez will make 2012 debut Wednesday
Cleveland Indians reinstated pitcher Roberto Hernandez on Tuesday, and he is scheduled to make his 2012 debut on Wednesday.
Hernandez, 31, has just finished serving a three-week suspension by Major Leagye Baseball for lying about his identity. When Hernandez signed with the Indians in 2000, he claimed to be Fausto Carmona, and he played under that name until being arrested in the Dominican Republic in January for identity fraud.
Visa issues prevented him from entering the United States until this summer, and he came to Cleveland in July. He has made four minor league starts, going 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA for Low-A Lake County and Triple-A Columbus. His most recent outing came on Friday with Triple-A Columbus in a 5-1 win over Indianapolis.
Hernandez takes the roster spot vacated by Josh Tomlin, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 13.
Tomlin, 27, was a member of the Indians Opening Day rotation and is 5-8 with a 6.36 ERA, including 5-8 with a 5.72 ERA in 16 starts.
