Indians to designate Lowe for assignment, start Kluber

The SportsXchange

The Cleveland Indians announced right-handed pitcher Derek Lowe will be designated for assignment Thursday.

The move will allow the Indians to call up right-hander Corey Kluber from Class AAA Columbus.

By making this move, the Indians have 10 days to trade, release or send Lowe to the minor leagues.

The 16-year veteran started the season on a roll. He had a 3.06 ERA during his first 11 starts this season. However, he has been struggling since the second half began.

Lowe has a 0-3 record with a 15.88 ERA in his previous three starts. He allowed seven runs over 2 1/3 innings to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

He is the final season of a four-year, $60 million contract he signed with the Braves, who traded him to the Indians last October.

Kluber, who is scheduled to start Thursday against the Kansas City Royals, was 11-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 21 starts for Columbus. He has 128 strikeouts in 125 1/3 innings.
