It's finally here. Andrew Luck will make his pro debut tomorrow, Sunday September 9 for the Indianapolis Colts. Luck and the Colts will travel to Chicago to face the Bears on the opening day of the 2012 season. For Colts' fans, this represents a new start. The team was practically gutted in the offseason and represents an entirely different makeup than fans are used to. I'm excited about the new look team and am looking forward to what is to come in 2012.
Indianapolis faces a difficult challenge to open the season against the Chicago Bears. Chicago has talent on both sides of the ball and is a good football team.
The biggest concern for me in this game is Indianapolis' offensive line against the Chicago pass rush. The offensive line will go into the game down one starter. Joe Reitz will miss the game with a knee injury and will be replaced by Seth Olsen at left guard. This adds concern to an already poor offensive line. If this group can play effectively, Andrew Luck is good enough to put the team in a position to win. This should be the biggest priority for the team and I hope the line performs well in their first true test.
Fans should be excited to see the new identity of the team in this game. The preseason never gives a true reflection of a team since stars sit out and teams hold back on their playbook. This will be an immediate test to see see how well Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis fit in with the new 3-4 defensive scheme. I've thought all along that the two will excel, but this will be the first chance to see how they fare. If it does fit them well, this game will prove it since Chicago has a poor offensive line themselves.
I'm predicting that Indianapolis comes out and upsets Chicago in this game. I think Andrew Luck is a special player and will have no trouble moving the ball against Chicago's cover two defense. Also, I think fans should expect to see good things from the Indianapolis defense in this one. The addition of cornerback Vontae Davis will immediately prove it was worth it. I think fans should expect a close game that comes right down to the fourth quarter.
Prediction: Colts 24, Bears 20
