Shirley, 6-foot-5 and 329 pounds, was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 5th round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. He played in three games for the Bengals during his rookie season, chalking up four tackles, including one in a game against the Colts.
Shirley then spent 2009 on Cincinnati's practice squad and 2010 on their Reserve/Non-Football Injury List after getting hurt in a charity basketball game in the offseason.
He was signed back to the Bengals' practice squad in 2011 but again had to work through some injuries in the preseason. He was ultimately released by the team right before the regular season began, spent a few days as a member of the Seattle Seahawks, and then was picked up by the Carolina Panthers.
Shirley played in the final four games of the regular season for Carolina, putting up 4 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.
Shirley is only the fourth defensive tackle listed on the Colts roster. He joins Ricardo Mathews, Drake Nevis, and Ollie Ogbu at the position heading into training camp.
Training camp begins for the Colts on July 29 in Anderson, Ind. The team reports to camp on July 28.
