Junior swingman Justin Black and senior guard Anthony Hubbard did all they could to keep Morgan State in the game, but the Bears had no answer for Illinois State forward Jackie Carmichael on Sunday at Redbird Arena in Normal, Ill. Carmichael, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior who posted double-doubles against Mississippi and Stanford in last year's NIT, produced a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds, leading the Redbirds to an 87-68 victory. After trailing by as many as 22 points early in the second half, the Bears (3-4) cut Illinois State's lead to 54-46 with 9:30 to play, but Carmichael and junior forward Jon Ekey helped the Redbirds (7-3) pull away. Carmichael made 9 of 15 field-goal attempts and 12 of 13 free throws. Ekey finished with 18 points. Black had a career-high 21 points. Hubbard came off the bench to post 16 points and nine rebounds, but he committed seven of his team's 24 turnovers. Illinois State shot 50.9 percent from the field while holding Morgan State to 43.1-percent shooting. Morgan State forward Dewayne Jackson, who went into the contest averaging 13.2 points per game, was held to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting.
