COMMENTARY | Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan is the latest player being linked with a move to the Emirates.
The Mirror claims that while Dortmund wants to hold on to the vital central midfielder, a bid in excess of $30 million could be enough to pry Gundogan away from the Champions League finalists.
While Borussia Dortmund may have a price in mind for Gundogan, the player's father believes his son should stay at the club. He told German sports magazine Kicker, "I am keen to ensure he (Ilkay) remains with Borussia Dortmund. He is doing fine so it's a bit early to move to a club in England or Spain at this point in time."
The player's father also added, "Borussia Dortmund will be coming up with an offer of a new contract soon. We will be able to oversee things much better then."
Gundogan has been an important piece for Dortmund since arriving to the club two years ago. While he might not score a great deal of goals, Gundogan is more known for his movement, passing, and skill on the ball. The Mirror also claims that Gundogan is seen as a long-term replacement for the 32-year-old Mikel Arteta.
If the Gunners do not see a bid accepted for Gundogan, it would appear that their attention would turn to Bayern Munich's Luiz Gustavo. Gustavo is on the outside looking in at the Bayern Munich club and will most likely be sold this month. Wolfsburg is said to be keen on the player as well.
Arsenal fans probably shouldn't hold their breath for the Gundogan transfer to go through. However, if the Gunners do get their man, Arsenal will be getting a very solid player. Gundogan is one of the most sought-after central midfield talents in Europe, as Manchester United have also been linked with the player.
Nevertheless, Luiz Gustavo would not be a terrible backup plan for Arsenal. Gustavo seems to be the sort of player the Gunners are in need of at the moment. The defensive midfielder can also play in the central defense, a position at which the Gunners are thin at the moment because of injuries.
