IceDogs dismiss GM Brown, coaching staff

The Niagara IceDogs have dismissed general manager Dave Brown just two days after leading the team through the annual OHL draft.

Brown confirmed to Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday night that head coach Mike McCourt and assistant coach Randy Ladouceur were also relieved of their duties by the team.

According to team owner Denise Burke, the contracts of Brown and his coaches were not renewed.

"We felt it was in the best interest of the Niagara IceDogs to go with a singular GM/Head Coach," wrote Burke via email on Tuesday night. "Don't get me wrong, Dave, Mike and Randy gave everything to Niagara and they are all upstanding individuals, but we just felt we needed to go in a different direction."

Brown was originally hired as assistant GM by the IceDogs when the team was based in Mississauga. He was then promoted to general manager and moved with the team when it was purchased by Bill and Denise Burke and relocated to St. Catharines, Ont.

The IceDogs finished the regular season with a 26-34-2-6 record and were ousted in the first-round of the playoffs by the Ottawa 67’s in five games.

In January, Brown pulled off a blockbuster deal sending St. Louis Blues defenceman Alex Pietrangelo, 19-year-old centre Chris DeSousa and 19-year-old goalie Petteri Simila to the Barrie Colts. In exchange the IceDogs received 16-year-old centre Ryan Strome, defenceman Simon Gronvaldt, two second-round picks, a third-round pick and a ninth-round pick.

Ironically, Barrie head coach Marty Williamson has been rumoured to be among the replacements for Brown’s old job. Williamson, who coached the Colts to the OHL final, is in the final year of his contract with Barrie.

The Colts were defeated by the Windsor Spitfires in the championship series in Game 4 on Tuesday in Windsor.
